The Park Hill Playgroup writes:

Dear Moms and Dads-

We are starting a play group at the Racquet Club this fall which will
meet (tentatively) on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. It
is geared toward preschoolers 0-5 years. Nannies and guests are
welcome.
If you are interested, we are having our first meeting this Saturday
at 9:30 am at the clubhouse in the kids room. We will formallydiscuss schedules and objectives and informally mingle and get to know
each other.

We are looking to take the club’s social potential for our kids to
another level, providing a safe and friendly environment where our
kids can bond and play. And where we parents can socialize and discuss
issues and events that pertain to us and our families.

Hope to see you there. If you are interested and cannot make the
meeting on Saturday, please let us know and we will email you the
points of the meeting.

Please feel free to call or write with any questions:

More fun than a barrel full of monkeys.

No actual monkeys were harmed in the making of this playgroup

It appears to me that fewer people are driving up Undercliff this week. Granted it’s only Wednesday and I did not walk down yesterday, but I have not seen multiple cars driving up in the short time it takes me to walk down the hill as I did when the signage first went up. Of course last week (or was it the week before) the low light was the YPD patrol car (tag number 303) driving up the hill without being on an emergency call (no lights and siren). This morning some charming neighbor (NY tags BLB 8919) drove up the hill, but at a time when I was the only potential human point of impact.

I am still concerned about this issue. As people generally get the idea the street is one way going down, it actually gets more dangerous when people violate the law and drive up. People driving down the hill have taken to driving in the middle of the street since there is no legal need to share the road with an opposing lane of traffic. When there are leaves on the trees this presents a problem in two places; the point by the lower elevator house where the road bears right and the point where the road takes a hard left to cross the former Getty Square Branch right of way. Because of the foliage at those points you cannot see if there is a car coming illegally toward you. You can imagine the scenario for a serious collision. To wit, a driver coming down the hill in the middle of the road at the legal city speed limit of 30 mph cannot see a scofflaw traveling in the other direction at 30 mph and you have the recipe for a disaster or at least a word problem for an exercise in force vectors.

Anyone else have Undercliff observations?

The Zoning Board will hold its 2nd hearing on the application for a variance at 44 Wingate Rd on this coming Tuesday, Oct. 18 - 6:00 - City Hall. The owner would like to create a building lot on what is now a side yard. Anyone interested in preserving the open space left in Park Hill should attend. You do not necessarily have to speak - simply being there to register opposition is enough.

Here’s a google map of the location.

I don’t know the owner, nor do I have any knowledge of what they intend to put there aside from what my friend writes. I am, however, prima facia against building Park Hill out anymore than it has been. It ultimately reduces all our property values and lowers the aesthetic quality of our neighborhood.

I can imagine, however, many reasons an owner would want to establish a buildable lot: perhaps they need the money from its sale for their retirement; perhaps they’re in dire financial straights; perhaps they intend to build a small bungalow for their disabled parents. Then again, perhaps they’re just greedy. I’m not inclined to give folks the benefit of the doubt about this, but I am willing to listen to what they have to say.

Agree or disagree, you should attend if at all possible.

p.s., I haven’t forgotten about the police blotter information. Let’s just say that the Yonkers PD is taking their time with my request.

The Saw Mill River Coalition writes:

Hello friends,

The Saw Mill River Coalition, in cooperation with the NYS DOT and
Westchester County Parks, will be leading efforts to remove invasive vines
along two segments of the Saw Mill River parkway/river corridor on November
5 and November 12. WE ARE SEEKING VOLUNTEERS. We need your help to spread
the word.

Please post and circulate the attached press release and flyer to all
interested parties. We are also looking for organizations, municipalities,
and businesses interested in adopting segments of the parkway for vine
removal in the future. This is an excellent opportunity for CACs, fraternal
and environmental orgs, local businesses, garden clubs, and others to help
the river habitat and get their name out in the community (adopters will get
a sign on the parkway provided by the DOT).

Leaders of groups that will participate on Nov. 5 & 12 are urged to attend
the DOT safety training course on October 27, at 10 a.m. Details will be
sent upon request.

Thanks for your support for this effort.

Best,

Carol

The Resident’s Association writes:

The Park Hill Land Conservancy and the Park Hill Residents’ Assoc. have been accepted by the Department of Transportation adopt-a-highway program for the Park Hill gateway area at the Rumsey Road/Cross County Parkway intersection.

We will be doing once a month Saturday clean up and vine cutting for the next year. Volunteers are urgently needed. Come for an hour - come for the day - meet your neighbors. The DOT provides hard hats, safety vests, orange trash bags. We provide labor and enthusiasm for picking up garbage, rooting out invasive vines and planting.

The schedule of Saturdays is:
October. 22
November 11
December 10
…with 2006 dates to follow.

Please contact coordinator: Terry Joshi at 914 969 4142 or mommylooloo AT hotmail DOT com.

Into orange? Got a neatness fetish? Or do you just want to keep the first part of Park Hill that we and most visitors often see clean? Than sign up for a Saturday. If everyone does one Saturday a year, why in no time at all you’ll be able to eat right off that highway. Or, um, something like that.
